    There are two approaches to meaning: the intentional and the unintentional. Should every design be thought through to such a degree that every possible meaning embedded in the work is not only perceived but understood, before it is ever presented to another? Will that make the design seem stale? Or should every design be thought through to such a degree that there tens or hundreds or thousands of unexplored, unintended meanings within it? Will that make the design come off as naïve? Does the answer lie somewhere in between, or does that come off as weak and non-committal? It's foolish to think that you will ever understand every cultural, social, or political nuance that your Design could possibly contain, but it's even more foolish to send your work out without considering the meanings that other cultures may pick up, much less your own. On the spectrum, I think that it is stronger to lean towards the fully understood than the non-understood. Realize your own cultural limits as a designer, know them, embrace them, and then try your damnedest to push them.
