    Anonymous   Joke Ownership

    14.12.03 -  20:17

Last week I was making fun of how the U.S. was limiting the most important post-Iraq bids to companies in countries who supported the war. Trying to be witty, I commented on how the company presidents fought bravely in the war protecting our freedoms. How board members were under fire while they patrolled Iraqi cities. Saturday night my little political commentary was mentioned on Saturday Night Live. I felt my opinion's importance level drop. The joke was no longer my own. Anytime I mention it in the future, someone may think that I had taken it from a television show. It is like telling someone a joke in mixed company and have them repeat it days later with a bigger crowd response. You can no longer lay claim to it, because they would think you took it from the other person. I guess you can't really own a joke anymore because the title exchanges hands so quickly.
