Okay, so oops. I saw this article the other day. Mark Simpson, the Brit that coined the term Metrosexual in 1994 and introduced it to the US a year ago July has apologized for introducing the word to Americans.
But that's not what I'm writing about. What I'm writing about is the fact that metrosexual doesn't even refer to hetero men with style. It originally referred to an urban Narcissus, irregardless of sexuality. The Metro is in love with himself and the pursuit of pleasure above all else.
Mark Simpson's definition:The typical metrosexual is a young man with money to spend, living in or within easy reach of a metropolis -- because that's where all the best shops, clubs, gyms and hairdressers are. He might be officially gay, straight or bisexual, but this is utterly immaterial because he has clearly taken himself as his own love object and pleasure as his sexual preference. Particular professions, such as modeling, waiting tables, media, pop music and, nowadays, sport, seem to attract them but, truth be told, like male vanity products and herpes, they're pretty much everywhere. Well, armed with this newfound knowledge, I must admit that I am not Metrosexual. Oh well, I don't need a label to define me.
Although it helps when you're stuck for conversation with a stranger.
Perhaps I'm another bit of Simpson word-smithery: The Homohetero -- Hetero men who may or may not be metrosexual but nevertheless avidly consume what Simpson calls 'gay porn for straight men' such as Guy Ritchie movies, Eminem lyrics and prison rape cable shows like OZ.
The only problem here is that I don't watch OZ or Guy Ritchie movies... well Snatch was entertaining, but that's the only one I've seen.
