It seems like the Civil Rights Movement (black) has stalled. There doesn't seem to ever be any new motion toward getting black boys any more literate or girls any less likely to be single mothers. Yes, I know I'm not talking about every african american, but if you're going to make a category of them, then they tend to do less well than other categories.

But maybe what I really mean is that it seems like the black culture has become comfortable in the role of victim. Every black comic still has to do "It's so hard for us black people" routines, Wanda Sykes still has to say "Negro" all the time to highlight her blackness, Will Smith still has to say "It just be raining black people" in his movies. Wanda just can't be a funny woman, she has to be a funny black woman. If Will Smith didn't keep bringing it up, I would just think of him as a fun guy... now he's the fun black guy.

Does there ever come a time when black people just think of themselves as people?

Now to contrast, the Gay Rights Movement seems to be doing really well. They aren't out protesting in quite the same way, but now it's ok to have gay characters on tv, be "out" in the workplace, etc. (The Daily Show calls it a "Gaysplosion.") It seems like the GRM is about just being people and then others will see that it's ok. It looks like within a few years, gay unions will be government-recognized. Lot's of progress.

Has the Civil Rights Movement become too accustomed?
