Planned Obsolescence verging on the ludicrous. It's not even really planned obsolescence, it's just wasteful. Perhaps you've heard of this: It's called the ez-D, available from Flexplay.
So the idea behind this is that the DVD reacts with the air. When you purchase this DVD it's sealed in an airtight package. When you open the package it is exposed to air for the first time. It's playable for 48 hours and then the plastic has reacted to such a point that it turns black, thus making the plastic impenetrable to the laser ergo making the Disc useless.
Flexplay says that this is for the consumer who wants to "rent" a DVD but doesn't want to go through the hassle of returning the DVD. They only have to throw it away.
Excuse me? They just throw it away? How wasteful is that? Terribly. Technically they claim that you are to recycle it when it is obsolete, not throw it away. However, the person who buys a DVD that is designed to became useless in 48 hours is not the same person who recycles. This is not the type of person who sorts their trash. If this infuriates you as much as it infuriated me, write them a letter like I did. How did we get to become such a wasteful society?
