So on NPR this evening, they were discussing what kind of services, honors, recognition, or something the Columbia crew was going to receive... They were discussing W.'s plans to go speak, and (I kid you not) they quoted some aide who used the term "juggle." As in, "George Bush may have to juggle a few scheduled appointments to speak... blah blah blah..."
I can't say that I like the word "juggle" in this sense. To me it says: a space ship blew up, eh?... I guess I'll have to go. Or. Hmmm, this was a most inopportune time for such a catastrophe... let's see if I can pencil something in...
This earth will only sustain us for so long... we need to be out exploring to see where we can go next. And in the course of exploring, we'll probably lose a few more brave explorers, but we shouldn't trivialize their efforts or tragedies as a petty inconvenience.
"Oh, Merriweather and William have been slaughtered in the westernmost reaches of the territory?... I suppose I could pen a few letters of condolence to their widows, but first I had a prior tryst engaged with Sally... I'll attend to the sympathies in the morrow." |
