Michel D   Is a short bus still necessary?

    2.9.03 -  11:45

I saw one this morning, and it gave me pause. In today's politically correct red-taped bureaucracy where every ADA detail is scrutinized to the point that nobody feels uncomfortably pointed out, why is there still a short bus? The entire symbolism of the short bus is that the riders are somehow disabled. Don't they stand out enough from "normal" society already? Do they need the stigma of handicapped transportation as well. And it isn't that the bus is short, it's that before one even sees the riders, one has a pretty good idea of what they look like... Before they're even given the benefit of any chance of "fitting in" they're branded with an automotive marker.

We might as well make them wear Yellow Stars of David pinned to their chest.
